Grey’s of the Sea

I usually don’t watch shows as they come out. I don’t have a TV nor cable. The only things I have are Hulu, Netflix, and Crunchyroll accounts; I usually am binge-watching shows. Imagine my surprise when my friend, Panda, told me that I needed to watch this show that was coming out every single week: a medical drama that takes place on a boat. Well, call me intrigued. That show is “Doctor Odyssey.” Some may have heard of this show from the aside John Oliver made on “Last Week Tonight,” but I was there from week three or four.

Anyway, “Doctor Odyssey” is about a Doctor who seems to be running from his everyday life because of a wake-up call from being a “patient zero” for COVID in his hospital. Enter the two other medical staff on the boat, sorry, ship. Anyway, we know how most medical dramas typically unfold and eventually lead to romance. I really thought this show would be interesting, since from the very beginning it was hinting at an OT3, or one true threesome for those not in the know. There was chemistry between everyone. Unfortunately, at least Panda and I think, the networks got involved, and nonsense started happening. While the medicine and medical aspects were still good, I would not stand the relationship as the show kept going. I eventually started skipping anytime our favorite characters were not doing their jobs. While I enjoyed the show and where I thought it was going, I don’t think the show will continue. There were lots of plot points that would keep that from happening unless there is a time jump, and everything was resolved in the season finale. Maybe start with another group. Either way, it was a good weekend binge if you’re looking for something quick to watch.

~Sent from my iPhone

Let me begin with the title of this post is honestly one of the most terrifying things a college student can get from their professor. It strikes fear in a similar way that I think this was supposed to in the piece of media that I will be reviewing today.

When it first came out, I was interested in what Baby Reindeer was about. I love a good crime drama, but I have tons of other ones that I have yet to get to. I’ll add it to the bottom of my list, I thought. That was until in my YouTube recommended feed, it said that the “real-life stalker” was being interviewed. And then I saw the video that another victim was also being interviewed. It was only until this came up when this show was moved up on my to-watch list. I also wanted to see if the complaints I was hearing were called for.

Now, Baby Reindeer deserves all of the content warnings and is not at all for the faint of heart. It is gripping and terrifying, yet at the same time, tries to explain the motivations of all the characters, even if it is stomach-turning to think about. Strike one for this fear is understanding that this is a true story, or as true as Netflix thought they could get. In most stories like this, it’s comforting since it is well known that it is fake, even if these are situations that happen in real life. There is no cognitive dissonance here. Strikes two and three, well, aren’t for the faint of heart and cannot really be mentioned here.

One thing that I did have to keep in the back of my mind here was that there was a possible lawsuit in the mix, with it apparently being too easy for people to figure out who different characters were based on. From the little information I knew beforehand, I would completely agree. The only thing I could tell they changed about one victim was their sex. Everything was exactly the same: look, occupation, location, mannerisms. Connecting the dots would have been way too easy, and changing a lot of things would probably have saved everyone a lot of headache. (I completely don’t support people trying to find these people, but the internet is going to internet.) I’m actually interested in the story as it goes from here, as there were a couple of things that were dramatized under the notion of being a true story, rather than “based on a true story.” If anyone hears about this before me, please let me know.

Jolly Good Show

Since I’ve been on my PhD journey, I’ve gotten really into random shows that I thought I was too “old” to watch when I was younger. When your brain needs to decompress it will decompress. Now adays, I’ve gotten into some older kids cartoons that I didn’t give myself permission to watch. Well, now that I don’t care, I’ve just finished watching Regular Show. I wanted a cute little show that I didn’t necessarily have to keep track of each and every little thing and just enjoy.

Overall, I thought it was a really cute show. It wasn’t laugh-out-loud funny to me, but it kept my attention the entire time and was very amusing. My favorite story line, because it makes absolutely no sense without the context, was about the format wars. I did in fact find this absolutely hilarious, but that is a conversation for people who have watched it. Another thing that amused me is that I think you’re supposed to believe that every one is technically a person. Our main protagonists include a blue jay, racoon, a gumball machine, and a lollypop, I think, just to name a few.

Either way, the show is very episodic and there is no really through line, until the last season, which I thought that was very well done. I highly enjoyed the series, and would definitely watch again at some point.

Come On, Grab Your Friends

Recently, I’ve been having a blast watching cartoons from a couple of years ago that I didn’t get to watch. I was probably too busy watching something else, but I have finally gotten back to them. They are a great way to decompress after spending hours in the lab running experiments. This week’s addition to that list is Adventure Time.

I remember not really watching this show because it was advertised as very much episodic with no throughline. I don’t know who told me this, but if I find out, I’m going to tell them they’re a big fat liar. Moving on, this was a very enjoyable show. It was nice to wrap myself in a blanket with a cup of tea and binge-watch a season… or two. My favorite duo is definitely Princess Bubblegum and Marceline, the Vampire Queen. Their ever-evolving friendship was just enjoyable to watch. There were also some very deep episodes and plot lines, which are always surprising to watch in a children’s show. If you look past the surface for this supposedly silly show, there is a lot going on, and I think anyone would enjoy this. I just enjoyed every minute of watching it.

A Very Hard Watch

There has been a documentary series that was being talked about all over the internet. Ironically, I thought I would watch it myself instead of taking someone else’s word for it. The documentary I’m talking about is “Shiny Happy People.” To begin, this documentary is tough to sit through. It is not something to watch or read about if you are not in the right headspace to even think about this.

The documentary is centered around the Duggar family for those not in the know. For those who don’t know who they are, they are the family from the TLC show “19 Kids and Counting.” I never watched the show because I wasn’t interested in learning about a family that had 19 children, but at the same time, I could see the appeal. I watch people in what I would deem bad situations to understand or make myself feel smarter. Moving on from that, the Duggar family was part of what I would call a Christian fundamentalist cult known as the Institute of Basic Life Principles or IBLP.

This documentary is important since it discusses some of the dangers of Christian fundamentalism that have been creeping through the country and the world, in some cases. I will note that I do not care about your religious or spiritual beliefs if you do not hurt someone or yourself. The teaching of this group has led to the hurt and suffering of many people. Many survivors have spoken up to present their stories, which I was very glad were a part of the documentary series, instead of focusing only on the Duggars. Now, if you are in the right place, I would recommend watching. It is a tough watch, but a necessary one.

How Does It Hold Up: Bones Pt 2

It was over 3 years ago that I started rewatching on of my favorite shows, Bones. As I said in my last post, the first six seasons were my favorite season, and I’m here to tell you that that has not changed. It didn’t take me long to finish the show because I cannot binge watch correctly. I just found better things to do with my time, such as watching Law & Order: Special Victims Unit from the very beginning. I am 100% confident that the only reason why I finished watching the show was because it was being taken off of Hulu, and I didn’t want to find a different streaming service just to watch one show. It became such as drag to watch that only got exciting every now and again. The last season is probably the best of this later half since it does close some plot holes that have been in the show for years. Either way, if I were to rewatch this show again, I will be sticking to the first six season. As of now, the latter seasons do not really exist and are some random person’s head cannon.

Dirty Money

Over the summer, I became a little obsessed with documentaries and docuseries, or documentary series. While I was inserting things into whatever word document, I would have a brand new episode up. Now I won’t talk about every single one, but the first one I will talk about is Dirty Money. In essence, it talks about different companies and scandals associated with them. I personally found it fascinating. I will admit, the last episode is a bit political, talking about Donald Trump, but it was mostly talking about his past up to running for office; it was informative with out too much of a liberal sway. It was there, but not really overwhelming. Overall, it was a decent docuseries. It also showed multiple points of view, which was also interesting. I may have to give it another watch, or wait until another season comes out on Netflix (if it does within a reasonable amount of time).

My Childhood All Over Again

One of the shows that I would make sure to watch whenever it was on, was Full House. Now, I bet you can imagine how excited and skeptical that I was when said that they were going to reboot it into Fuller House. I’ll admit, I wasn’t so sure that the cheese of the original show and the heart-wrenching family moments would still be there, but let me tell you, it is on point. I don’t care if it is nostalgia getting to me, I’m having fun with this show. I recently finished the fourth season. It’s been an absolute trip with plot twists nearly everywhere. I wish I could tell you anything, but it feels like it will be spoilers. A bunch of my favorite characters came back and brought new adorable characters along for the ride. If you are able to, I would just set aside a weekend, probably a long one, and just finish the entire show in one go. I heard a rumor that there is only one more season left. I’m a bit mixed by this. The show is so good, and I want it to continue. On the other hand, I don’t want it to continue to the point where it’s stupid and a total waste of time. I’m sure that so many fandoms are worried about this, and I know that I have felt that way about shows that I loved before. I’m just crossing my fingers that it stays good. *knocking on wood*

Sparking Joy in your Home

The latest line of shows that I’ve been watching on Netflix was Tidying Up with Marie Kondo. I figured that keeping your life in order was a way of loving yourself. And I can say with absolute certainty, that this show absolutely changed me. I’ll admit that I am a little bit of a hoarder, but what Marie was saying just got to me in a way that no one has before. She’s just this inspiration tiny woman with so much love in her heart. After watching her work in real life, I want to read her book. I’ll probably get even more tips from the woman in my college student price range. After reading that, or while maybe, I will go through my own tidying up session. I try, and it won’t really stick. I’m hoping that it will stick this time. I do want to move more into a minimalist life style, and I feel that this will be a great start, because I honestly have to much stuff for the space that I have to occupy. It might either be difficult to do in the mist of all of my studying, or it could be the very thing that I need to get my life somewhat on tract. We’ll just have to wait and see, I suppose.

Fabulous Inner Self

Following the theme of love, I decided to do one that discusses self-love. Given that information, I decided to talk about Queer Eye, the second version. I have actually binge-watch this series twice. I absolutely love this cast. First and foremost, I love diversity. Having two queer characters of color is amazing. Myself, being a person of color in the community, it feels kind of hard to find characters that I can see as myself. I don’t even care what gender they identify as I saw myself being represented in media. I also love the energy that the dive off of each other. In some shows, the people sometimes go off the deep end with the change, but these guys take it step-by-step. The nominees are still themselves at the end of the episode, they just have a better self-confidence about themselves. Also, because the changes are so simple, yet so meaningful, it’s possible to see that changes being used after the Fab 5 leave. Personally, I would love to see a “Where Are They Now?” episode, so that I can see if the changes were kept up. All of the people are lovely, so I absolutely would not mind seeing them again. This is actually one of the perfect shows to watch anytime. It will make you feel amazing the entire time. You might need to dab your eyes every now and again, but they’re tears of joy.
