One of my favorite shows is Bones. Even though it is officially done, I would love something that is very similar. That is how I find myself watching Sakurako-san no Ashimoto ni wa Shitai ga Umatteriu, A Corpse is Buried Under Sakurako’s Feet, or Beautiful Bones. Really long names, but it is fitting with the anime. After looking a bit into it, this anime is based on a novel. I follows an awkwardly scientist who loves putting together skeletons and ends up helping the police on cases were there is nothing but skeletal remains of humans. Sometimes she steps in before that because of the incessant nature of her lovable sidekick. I greatly enjoyed the show. It was fast paced in everything seemed to be going somewhere. My main complaint is that the show doesn’t really end. It feels as though they hoped they would get a second season and didn’t. There’s just this huge cliffhanger. Maybe there is something else that I just missed when I was looking around for more, or I might just need to read the book. Either one is a possibility at this point.

Love out on the Ice
So, I finally got around to finishing this anime. It honestly took me longer than I would genuinely like to say, but I finished it. That show would be Yuri!!! on Ice. I think I should start by saying that I am not the biggest fan of figure skating. I recognize that a lot of skill goes into the sport, but it’s not that interesting to me. I suppose that would explain why the show really lagged for me. I really like the premise of the show, but it was just soooooo slow. It probably had a lot to do with having the exact same routine every single episode. There was nothing really different. Some of the thoughts during the skating routines were different, but not really. If you really like figure skating and really enjoy the competition scene, you might enjoy this a lot more than I did. I really enjoyed everything else about the anime, I just couldn’t get behind all the dancing. I’m sorry Panda.
Maybe Mean What You Say
Next in my deep dive into documentary series is The Confession Tapes. I absolutely love procedural cop dramas and the confessions at the end of the episode are what you live for. This documentary takes that step in the entire process and takes a closer look at it. What if the confession isn’t everything? What if the confession wasn’t as true as television has led us to believe? This is that show. It follows several investigations where the central piece of evidence is the confession given. Both sides of the justice system give their take on each case. With some of the episodes, I’m completely stumped as to which side I’m on, and I completely believe that that is the entire point of this documentary: to shine a light on the fog that is sometimes our justice system. If you love a documentary that has lots of twists and turns, I would suggest checking this out on Netflix.
Childhood Lessons
I am an avid learner, much to the hatred of some people. One of my ideas of a good night is snuggling in a blanket watching a documentary. Now, this is not technically a documentary, but I think it should be close, and that thing is Bill Nye Saves the World. I just recently finished watching the series on Netflix, and I absolutely loved it. It reminded me of having the teacher in elementary school rolling in a gigantic television instead of teaching. The only difference is that instead of going over everyday science concepts, he had to go over some real-world stuff that is affecting our everyday lives. For that reason, it does get a tiny bit political at times, but in my personal opinion, it is not over the top. At times it feels heavy-handed, but it’s not that bad overall. If you love learning science, even from a childhood hero, I would recommend it. It truly made me feel like a kid again.
Female SNL Reunion
Another movie that I ended up watching during a Netflix binge session is what I would call the female Grown-Ups. For those who don’t know, Adam Sandler has a habit of making movies features mainly his friends. In this case, the movie is called Wine Country. The movie is filled with some of my favorite comedians from Saturday Night Live and I was laughing the entire. Well…, most of the time. At some moments, it was really heartwarming and was tugging at the heartstrings. I was expecting it to entirely be a comedy, but then it would get really deep at moments when I was least expecting it even though I really should have. It was primarily a movie about older women hanging out again after so many years apart. For the actresses in the movie, it completely works and it completely relatable without being completely ridiculous with the comedy thrown in. I would definitely give this movie a try.
Saving Yesterday
In my adventure through binging random movies on Netflix, I came upon See You Yesterday. The best way to describe the genre would be a mix of science fiction and current politics. It sounds weird but go along with me. The movie is time travel mixed with the Black Lives Matter movement, and I’ll admit, the set up for it was really good. Within the system they used, it made a lot of sense. The layout was logical and the motivations of the characters made sense. One of the only things I wasn’t too thrilled about was the main female protagonist. Overall, she was a pretty cool character and it was amazing to see an African American female involved in the sciences. My one problem with her is that at some moments, she seems unnecessarily “hard.” She would randomly act tough when the situation did not call for it. I know it’s really nitpicky but that was one thing that I particularly had a problem with. If you’re interested, it was still a really good movie and I would suggest really checking it out. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
Holidays in January (2020 Calendar)
It’s that time of the year again, where we pretend that everything is going to change and it really isn’t. The time where you stick to your resolutions for a couple of weeks before you inevitably give up. Trust me, I usually one of those people. We also come to the time of the month that I tell you the names of a whole bunch of holidays and y’all can decide if you want to celebrate them or not. I just like knowing what they are. Never Staying in a House on the Market
I feel that I should start this review off with a warning, so here it is.
WARNING: This movie was awful.
There I got that out of the way. I’m talking about the movie Open House. Before watching this movie, I watched the trailer, as one does. Thought it looked good and clicked play on the movie. The movie is very slow, there’s barely anything going on at all, and is pretty much just a slice of life movie. All of the scenes in the trailer happen pretty much within the last 10 minutes. Outside of this nothing happens. There is a disgruntled teenager and some really weird flirting attempts. I don’t understand at all what is going on or where the director and writer thought this was going. Take my advice and save your time. Just keep scrolling past this.
Silence Saves
An interesting movie that I watched was The Silence. I admit that I was expecting a horror movie, so don’t go into it thinking that. It is more along the lines of a thriller. I was… a bit weird. I liked it, but weird. The premise is that these creatures have escaped from a cave. They are swarming the country and are extremely sensitive to sounds. Good thing our protagonists and her family understand American Sign Language.
The plot, for the most part, is systematic and obvious. All the key points of thrillers are hit, with just the right amount of timing. In my personal option, I wished the thrilling part got there faster. It wasn’t until the very end that the movie really got going. Either way, it’s a movie that you really don’t need to think about what’s going on. For what it is worth, it is a decent movie. It’s not absolutely amazing and noteworthy, but it is a good watch.
For anyone who is planning on watching this movie, can you confirm if it’s true that they don’t say the mom’s name ever? I don’t recall a single scene where they say it. I’m hoping that I’m wrong, but that’s something you really shouldn’t forget to put in.
Dirty Money
Over the summer, I became a little obsessed with documentaries and docuseries, or documentary series. While I was inserting things into whatever word document, I would have a brand new episode up. Now I won’t talk about every single one, but the first one I will talk about is Dirty Money. In essence, it talks about different companies and scandals associated with them. I personally found it fascinating. I will admit, the last episode is a bit political, talking about Donald Trump, but it was mostly talking about his past up to running for office; it was informative with out too much of a liberal sway. It was there, but not really overwhelming. Overall, it was a decent docuseries. It also showed multiple points of view, which was also interesting. I may have to give it another watch, or wait until another season comes out on Netflix (if it does within a reasonable amount of time).
