King of the Tigers Pt. 1
As you can probably tell from the title, I’ll be going over the crazy show that embraced us throughout the quarantine. Now, I’ve tried my best to keep from any information regarding this show other than the knowledge that this show is absolutely crazy. For that reason, I decided that if I truly want to talk about this show appropriately, I would need to go episode by episode in discussing the craziness that happens. I am writing this as of watching the first episode, so spoilers through that episode.
When Birds Attack
Over the course of this quarantine, I have continued watching amazingly bad movies. As of writing this post, I have watched the entirety of the Birdemic series. For those who have never heard of this series, it is a really bad attempt at having an environmental message. Both movies center around birds coming and attacking people because they are mad at global warming. Yes, that is the premise of both movies.
The thing about both movies is that even though I have told you the summary of the entire movie, you are still going to have to wait about forty minutes for anything to happen. In the first movie, Birdemic: Shock and Terror, a good portion of the movie watching the protagonist drive to work, fill up his gas tank, and get stuck in traffic. For a movie about saving the environment, a lot of time is spent driving. That and protagonist and a flat board of nothingness. Also, the CGI is utterly atrocious, but that is part of the fun.
The second movie, Birdemic 2: The resurrection, the protagonist spends the majority of his time getting from place to place on foot, so there is an improvement. Also, he does show emotion. It’s really creepy but is an improvement over a flat board. The majority of the second movie revolves around call-backs from the previous movie. Not much was added, but references. I would say the second movie is a bit better because it is more self-aware of how crazy everything is.
Love bad movies, most definitely check this series out. Both movies are on Amazon for your viewing pleasure.
Merging the Kingdom Back Together
A new merging game that has recently dropped on the GooglePlay store is Wild Kingdom. In essence, you are the new ruler of this kingdom and have to build it back up with the help of a sketchy assistant. The game is currently in early access, but I still feel that there is nothing to really show for the game overall. I really like the art style. It’s very Disney-like, similar to Robin Hood. I just can’t really tell if I would enjoy this game in the long run. It took me twenty minutes to get to the point in the early access where I literally can do nothing more. So far, I’m neutral about the game. I would definitely like to see more to see if I couldn’t enjoy the game long term. If they make more, I might come back to see how much it has changed, but for right now, I can’t really recommend it.
Modern Jurassic Era
Let me preface this by saying that I love terrible movies. The lower the IMDB or Rotten Tomatoes score, the better. That is what led me to watch Velocipastor. I spent the entire movie laughing at the movie with my friends, while still practicing social distancing. I honestly can’t tell if this movie was purposely bad or accidentally bad. Either way, it was hilarious.
The movie starts with a young priest needing to get away from the church in small-town America for a bit after the death of his parents. After driving to China, he comes across a woman being chased by a ninja for a stone that she possesses. On her death bed, she gives the stone to our priest and he ends back up in America. Turns out, this stone allows him to turn into a dinosaur. One night, he saves a prostitute who later convinces him to use his powers to help save people. That is where the story begins.
I’m pretty sure from the small description that I gave you, you can figure out where some things are heading towards. The Christianity piece of the movie doesn’t add anything to the movie. Honestly, it makes things more ridiculous if you actually think about it. Also, there’s a Vietnam flashback… for reasons. If this sounds interesting to you, I would definitely recommend watching this. Even if you think this is stupid, I would still recommend you watch it because honestly seeing is believing when it comes to this movie.
Super Human Space Rocks
I would like to first start by stating that I know I’m late. I’ve been told by my friends several times over. I’ve been busy. Now, that over with, on to the review.
Many of the people in this fandom should already know from the title, but I am here to talk about Steven Universe for the people who have not gotten around to it. For the most part, I do not watch the more recent American cartoons. Even though I heard good reviews about this show, I was still slightly skeptical. For the most part, that skepticism was unfounded. The overall storyline was interesting, the characters were multi-faceted, and the ideas introduce was something I had never really seen before. I was very progressive with the ideas presented. I do have one complaint though. I promise, its nothing too bad though. Towards the end of season 5, where the story starts to really hit its climax, it felt as if the story would keep deviating from the storyline. In the beginning, when it was mainly exploring who the characters were, I was fine with it. But towards the end, I got a bit annoyed. Going back through now that I know the plotline, I might see how it added to things, but I didn’t at the time. Other than that one thing, what’s not to love about superheroes from outer space with amazing songs along the way?
As of writing this review, I have not watched the movie and what’s after, so please don’t give spoilers in the comments. But we can talk about how awesome the first five seasons are.
Maybe Mean What You Say
Next in my deep dive into documentary series is The Confession Tapes. I absolutely love procedural cop dramas and the confessions at the end of the episode are what you live for. This documentary takes that step in the entire process and takes a closer look at it. What if the confession isn’t everything? What if the confession wasn’t as true as television has led us to believe? This is that show. It follows several investigations where the central piece of evidence is the confession given. Both sides of the justice system give their take on each case. With some of the episodes, I’m completely stumped as to which side I’m on, and I completely believe that that is the entire point of this documentary: to shine a light on the fog that is sometimes our justice system. If you love a documentary that has lots of twists and turns, I would suggest checking this out on Netflix.
Childhood Lessons
I am an avid learner, much to the hatred of some people. One of my ideas of a good night is snuggling in a blanket watching a documentary. Now, this is not technically a documentary, but I think it should be close, and that thing is Bill Nye Saves the World. I just recently finished watching the series on Netflix, and I absolutely loved it. It reminded me of having the teacher in elementary school rolling in a gigantic television instead of teaching. The only difference is that instead of going over everyday science concepts, he had to go over some real-world stuff that is affecting our everyday lives. For that reason, it does get a tiny bit political at times, but in my personal opinion, it is not over the top. At times it feels heavy-handed, but it’s not that bad overall. If you love learning science, even from a childhood hero, I would recommend it. It truly made me feel like a kid again.
Female SNL Reunion
Another movie that I ended up watching during a Netflix binge session is what I would call the female Grown-Ups. For those who don’t know, Adam Sandler has a habit of making movies features mainly his friends. In this case, the movie is called Wine Country. The movie is filled with some of my favorite comedians from Saturday Night Live and I was laughing the entire. Well…, most of the time. At some moments, it was really heartwarming and was tugging at the heartstrings. I was expecting it to entirely be a comedy, but then it would get really deep at moments when I was least expecting it even though I really should have. It was primarily a movie about older women hanging out again after so many years apart. For the actresses in the movie, it completely works and it completely relatable without being completely ridiculous with the comedy thrown in. I would definitely give this movie a try.
Saving Yesterday
In my adventure through binging random movies on Netflix, I came upon See You Yesterday. The best way to describe the genre would be a mix of science fiction and current politics. It sounds weird but go along with me. The movie is time travel mixed with the Black Lives Matter movement, and I’ll admit, the set up for it was really good. Within the system they used, it made a lot of sense. The layout was logical and the motivations of the characters made sense. One of the only things I wasn’t too thrilled about was the main female protagonist. Overall, she was a pretty cool character and it was amazing to see an African American female involved in the sciences. My one problem with her is that at some moments, she seems unnecessarily “hard.” She would randomly act tough when the situation did not call for it. I know it’s really nitpicky but that was one thing that I particularly had a problem with. If you’re interested, it was still a really good movie and I would suggest really checking it out. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
