How Does It Hold Up: Jurassic Park

I almost feel ashamed to say this, but I think this is the best platform to say this. This is the first time I’ve ever seen Jurassic Park. I know, “how did I go twenty-six years before seeing this movie? Surely, you’ve seen some clips, right?” I went into this movie being told that it has some of the best CGI of an older movie, it was way better than the trash that was Jurassic World, and there is a book series. So now, this being the first time I’ve seen this movie, I’m here to say that this movie holds up very well.

Being a scientist, I’ll admit that I went into the movie trying to find problems with the science. I can’t help it; it’s what I do. Other than the one time they mentioned DNA and showed a picture of RNA, pretending someone can handle liquid nitrogen with their bare hands, and the slightly weird conversation about default sex, the science was pretty solid and believable. Yes, I did suspend my disbelief knowing that the science of bringing extinct species back to life had come this far in the 1990s, but it is still fascinating to look at the past understanding with where science currently is. Also, some of the ethical questions brought up in the movie are some of the same ethical questions we are looking at now with genetically engineering extinct species. Current conversations include bringing back the dodo, Woolly Mammoths, and some ancient type of tiger. I will admit that I am of two minds on this conundrum, in case anyone was wondering. I think if we can, we should bring back species that are extinct due to human influence, but those from natural selection, I don’t really see going too well. I have no justification or reasoning really, but that is currently where I stand.

Now, let’s talk about my main problem with the movie: Why did Dr. Sattler not get a gun? There was an entire locker full of guns as she was running around outside where we knew the dinosaurs had started escaping, yet they were thinking that only the men should have guns. There was a point where they bring up the sexism of the situation as the only physically-abled person available, but they still decided to run with this. Yes, it’s super minor in the scheme of everything, but that really pushed my buttons. You can give Dr. Sattler a gun and have Goldblum have his “French Girl” moment and have nothing about the movie change.

After seeing this movie, I am finally giving in to my exclamations that I will eventually see the eventual series and then eventually read the books. So, be on the lookout for my reviews of those. I’m actually really excited to see this series. Let’s see where this goes. I am skeptical about the number of sequels considering there are only two books, and there was a pretty solid out for any other movies. We’ll just have to see.

A Very Hard Watch

There has been a documentary series that was being talked about all over the internet. Ironically, I thought I would watch it myself instead of taking someone else’s word for it. The documentary I’m talking about is “Shiny Happy People.” To begin, this documentary is tough to sit through. It is not something to watch or read about if you are not in the right headspace to even think about this.

The documentary is centered around the Duggar family for those not in the know. For those who don’t know who they are, they are the family from the TLC show “19 Kids and Counting.” I never watched the show because I wasn’t interested in learning about a family that had 19 children, but at the same time, I could see the appeal. I watch people in what I would deem bad situations to understand or make myself feel smarter. Moving on from that, the Duggar family was part of what I would call a Christian fundamentalist cult known as the Institute of Basic Life Principles or IBLP.

This documentary is important since it discusses some of the dangers of Christian fundamentalism that have been creeping through the country and the world, in some cases. I will note that I do not care about your religious or spiritual beliefs if you do not hurt someone or yourself. The teaching of this group has led to the hurt and suffering of many people. Many survivors have spoken up to present their stories, which I was very glad were a part of the documentary series, instead of focusing only on the Duggars. Now, if you are in the right place, I would recommend watching. It is a tough watch, but a necessary one.

How Does It Hold Up: Bones Pt 2

It was over 3 years ago that I started rewatching on of my favorite shows, Bones. As I said in my last post, the first six seasons were my favorite season, and I’m here to tell you that that has not changed. It didn’t take me long to finish the show because I cannot binge watch correctly. I just found better things to do with my time, such as watching Law & Order: Special Victims Unit from the very beginning. I am 100% confident that the only reason why I finished watching the show was because it was being taken off of Hulu, and I didn’t want to find a different streaming service just to watch one show. It became such as drag to watch that only got exciting every now and again. The last season is probably the best of this later half since it does close some plot holes that have been in the show for years. Either way, if I were to rewatch this show again, I will be sticking to the first six season. As of now, the latter seasons do not really exist and are some random person’s head cannon.

Know the Mind in 20 Minutes

In a continuation of my feat in watching every documentary and documentary series ever, I watched The Mind, Explained. It is a spin-off of Explained, but this one focuses exclusively on the brain, dealing with topics such as dreams and anxiety. I will say that I felt completely attacked by the episode on anxiety in the fact that is exactly how I feel when I’m overcome by anxiety. Once I got over being attacked, it felt completely validating as I had a hard time explaining how I felt in the midst of a panic attack with others.

The episodes we’re interesting and very informative. I don’t know the most about psychology or neuroscience, so I cannot comment the validity of what was being told, outside of the anxiety one. I would definitely check this out if you are interested in these topics. I just hope that there is another season in the works.

Cost of the American Dream

I don’t even think that I should call this a recommendation. It’s more of what I could call a necessity. It today’s state of affairs, Immigration is a major topic that comes up in public discourse no matter what side of the aisle you’re straddling.

Currently, there is a docuseries that came out of Netflix titled Immigration Nation. Such a compelling story was told in what felt like a short 6 hours as I watched this in one sitting. This story is told through multiple lens: those of immigrants themselves, ICE agents, activist and even academics.

This entire series put me through an emotionally roller coaster. I will admit that this documentary seemed to have a more liberal sway, but I feel that it is important to understand the information that was given. It was an in-depth look at those on both sides of the argument, especially as it deals with the laws that surround immigration into this country. I found out things that I never would have thought to be possible that both shocked and disgusted me. I was going through bouts were I felt my eyes grow heavy with water and then wanted to punch people in the face. Violent, I know, but that’s what I wanted to do. This usually occurred when I felt that a person being portrayed was not taking things seriously, such as going into laughing fits over things said. I will admit that the entire context of these conversations were not released and the clips could have been taken out of context, thus me saying there was probably a liberal sway. There were just things that were bad takes and I don’t know how accurate they are to the person themselves.

Either way, this is a must watch. Immigration is a topic that is never going away and the system needs to have changes. What changes the will occur can be debated about thoroughly, but it is still a conversation that needs to be had with actual results coming out of it. This docuseries will give you more information with of which you can take how you want.

King of the Tigers Pt 7

Here I am, finally done with this mind-numbing show that took the country by storm. If you missed my last posting, you can find it here. But now, on to the rest of the drama.

King of the Tigers: Pt 6

I am back with what I think is the second to last episode of the completely crazy adventure that I have been on. I honestly think that I have lost come IQ points along the way. If you haven’t read any of my previous posts or watched this insanity, I would suggest you go to Part 5 to see the links for previous posts.

King of the Tigers Pt 5

I took a small break from this crazy show. Turns out, it is now the perfect way to distract myself from from what’s going on in the world. If you haven’t read my previous posts, click the number for the episode below. After this, there will be spoilers.

King of the Tigers Pt 4

I have once again made the tough and long journey to the Netflix tab in my browser and click play episode. I feel the need to reiterate that I am not binge-watching this show. In fact, I wait a day or two before watching another episode. A friend of mine almost spoiled somethings for me, so that’s why I am saying this. Before we continue, if you have not read the previous posts on this show, you can find Parts 1, 2, and 3 within this sentence.

King of the Tigers Pt 3

In this post, I will be continuing my crazy review of the Netflix docuseries Tiger King. Considering the order of these posts coming out overall, you might think that I’m binging this show, but you would be wrong. After each episode, I must take a bit to truly absorb what it was that I just saw. Before continuing to read this, I would suggest reading parts 1 and 2 so you can get an overall feel of how much my head hurts from this show.
